North American MINI Cooper Championship Rules
Group 1 MINI Cooper S Showroom Stock:

Engine-- stock except alternative air cleaner; any exhaust system from catalytic converter back.

Suspension– stock
Brakes– stock including JCW calipers and rotors, alternative pads, stainless steel lines, and fluid.

Transmission– stock except for any limited slip differential.

Wheels– Any

Tires– Any DOT performance tires.

Minimum weight including driver-- 2,600 pounds.

 

Group 2 MINI Cooper: Up to and including 2008

Engine– UK Challenge spec engine modifications to 135 bhp.

Suspension– Any after-market springs and shocks, sway bars, camber plates.

Brakes– Any after-market kits.

Transmission– Stock except for any limited slip differential

Wheels– Any

Tires– Any DOT performance tires.

Minimum weight including driver– 2,500 pounds.

 

Group 3 MINI Cooper S: 
Engine– Stock, except alternative air cleaner or cold air box; any exhaust system from catalytic converter back.

Suspension-- Any after-market springs, shocks, sway bars, camber plates.

Brakes– Any after-market kits.

Transmission– Stock except for any limited slip differential.

Wheels– Any

Tires– Any DOT performance tires.

Minimum weight including driver– 2,450 pounds.

 

Group 4 MINI Cooper S:  Up to and Including 2008 (R56)

Engine– UK Challenge spec including JCW and 06 MINI GP; modifications to 210 bhp.

Suspension– Any after-market springs and shocks, sway bars, and camber plates.

Brakes– Any after-market kits.

Transmission– Stock except for any limited slip differential.

Wheels– Any

Tires– Any DOT performance tires.

Minimum weight including driver– 2,450 pounds. 

 

Group 5:

Engine– Unlimited modifications to any bhp utilizing original engine block and cylinder head type.

Suspension– Any modifications and after-market kits.

Brakes– Any after-market kits.

Transmission– stock case, any internal modifications but MUST REMAIN FRONT WHEEL DRIVE.

Wheels– Any

Tires– Any DOT performance tires and full slick race tires.

Minimum weight including driver– 2,100 pounds.

 

Classic Minis:  Must comply with HSR or similar regulations.

 

Body modifications for all groups:  Alternative front bumpers, side skirts, rear bumpers, and rear spoilers.

 

Driver Safety Requirements:

 

  1. Automobile racing helmet with a Snell Foundation 1995 SA or later approved.  Full face helmets are strongly recommended.

 

  1. Driving suite and underwear of fire-retardant material, double layer Nomex or equivalent. (Optional for Autocross)

 

  1. Nomex gloves and Nomex or leather shoes. (Optional for Autocross)

 

  1. Head and neck restraints system from a nationally recognized supplier is highly recommended.

 

Race Car Safety Requirements:

 

  1. Roll Bar – The main roll bar hoop must be higher than the driver’s head.  The roll bar/roll cage is the entrant and driver’s responsibility; but it is recommended to follow SCCA or FIA specifications. (Recommended but optional for Autocross)

 

  1. Seat Belts – Minimum of a 5-point racing type seat belt, shoulder harness, and submarine strap is required.  The date of manufacture should not exceed 5 years. (Recommended but optional for Autocross)

 

  1. Driver’s side window net – This is standard in all race series. (Optional for Autocross)

 

  1. External Cut-Off Switch – This switch must cut off electrical power to the engine’s ignition system and all fuel pumps. (Optional for Autocross)

 

  1. Fire Extinguisher – A minimum of a 2.5 pound BC approved fire extinguisher is required.  An on-board fire suppression system is strongly recommended.  All extinguishers must be securely mounted within reach of the driver. (Optional for Autocross)

 

  1. Cars should be presented in a proper finished condition to a high standard, both cosmetically and mechanically.  Cars presented at mandatory technical inspection with any damage or primered areas may not participate.

 

  1. Driver and front compartment passenger windows must always be completely down.

 

  1. Engine – The engine must be the same type and material as originally provided in the year of manufacture.  For every car entered, the specific engine displacement must be disclosed in a certified engine builder’s or owner’s form.

 

Protests:

 

A competitor may protest another competitor in the same class if he/she feels rules are being broken.  The protest would have to made to the race organizer within 20 minutes of the completion of the race/Autocross.  The protestor will put pay $100 to protest.  The organizers of the North American MINI Cooper Challenge reserve the right to test any protested car on a suitable Dyno and/or dismantle any part of the car to verify legality.

 

NO LICENSE?  NO PROBLEM!

 

If you have completed a previous Phil Wicks Driving Academy event and have received a certificate, or attended a similar performance driving academy (i.e., PCA, BMW, Skip Barber, Bob Bondurant, Derek Daley, etc.) and have documented proof, you are eligible to enter a race.  On the morning of the race, you will participate in a specific race school classroom instruction, then you will be observed during the race practice session.  Track etiquette and competitiveness within your class and the key elements.  If everything is acceptable, you will participate in the race qualifying session and issued a “Provisional Phil Wicks Racing” license for the race/Autocross.

 

Participant conduct:

 

All drivers and team members must compete in a safe and courteous manner with respect to their competitors and officials at all times.  Sportsmanship is expected at the highest standard. Over-aggressive driving, blocking, or risk taking which could result in another competitor’s car being damaged will not be tolerated.  Necessary penalties from probation to suspension will be applied with judgment from the Chief Steward or Competition Director.  All decisions are final.

 

Notice:

 

As a condition of entry acceptance of Phil Wicks Racing, all entrants and drivers must certify that they have read these rules and their entry complies with these rules.  Phil Wicks Racing reserves the right to interpret, apply, modify, or create rules at its sole discretion.

 

Race Series/Autocross Point System:

 

The Championship will be decided by a point system.  Points will be awarded in each class of racing as follows:

 

First place                    12 points

Second place                  9 points

Third place                     7 points

Fourth place                   5 points

Fifth place                      3 points

Sixth place                      1 point

 

Please note that racers/Autocrossers that are the only competitor in their class will be bumped up to compete in the class above.

 

Racers/Autocrossers may choose their best 4 finshes plus the run-offs.  In the event of a tie at the end of the series, the winner will be determined by the most number of races/Autocrosses won or highest finishing positions within the groups.

 

Championship Winner:  The UK MINI Challenge and Phil Wicks Racing have an agreement that the winner of the North American MINI Cooper Challenge will be invited to race in an official UK Challenge race.  Airfare and racecar are provided.  The winner of the UK championship will come to the US and participate in a Phil Wicks Racing event.
